A diverse and inclusive environment is essential to children’s development. Diversity includes different countries, languages, abilities, families, interests, beliefs, and more. When children learn to value differences early, we lay the groundwork for a more compassionate and fair society.
How children benefit
- Empathy and understanding. Meeting classmates from different backgrounds helps children recognize and celebrate differences.
- Social skills and collaboration. Working with peers who have different viewpoints builds communication, listening, and conflict resolution.
- Cultural competence. Books, conversations, and celebrations from many cultures prepare children to navigate a connected world with respect.
- Self identity and self esteem. When children see themselves reflected in their classroom, they feel they belong.
- Readiness for the real world. Children who grow up valuing diversity are better prepared for diverse workplaces and friendships.
