11 Ways Teachers Can Support Newcomer Immigrant Families

By Sixiu Ye, Fanshawe College, Early Childhood Leadership. During her Parents2Partners internship, Sixiu focused on creating inclusive learning environments for children with special needs and newcomer families.

Educators have a unique chance to make newly arrived families feel welcome. It takes cultural sensitivity, empathy, and an understanding of each family’s needs. Here are practical ways to help.

  1. Learn about the cultures in your classroom, including traditions, customs, and family life.
  2. Celebrate multilingualism and bring students’ languages into learning.
  3. Build trust so parents feel comfortable sharing concerns and hopes.
  4. Share clear information in multiple languages about policies, curriculum, and events.
  5. Consider home visits to show genuine interest in families’ lives.
  6. Work with interpreters at conferences and school events.
  7. Offer orientation sessions on how the school system works and what support is available.
  8. Invite parent involvement through volunteering or cultural presentations.
  9. Teach all students to value diversity through an inclusive curriculum.
  10. Set up peer buddies to help new students make friends and find their way.
  11. Attend to emotional needs and connect families to counseling when needed.

With empathy, clear communication, and open minds, schools can help newcomer students and families feel welcomed, respected, and ready to succeed.
